The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is New Zealand’s most popular one-day tramp/trek/hike and is voted highly in the list of the world’s ‘best walks, treks and hikes’.
A trek across the spectacular active volcanic area is quite strenuous and takes around 6-8 hours to complete 19.4km.
You need good weather for this trek, I was lucky experiencing it on a calm sunny day but apparently it can get very windy.

Passing bright mineral lakes and views of valleys the scenery is superb, you won’t be disappointed.
It’s challenging too, with some good uphill climbs and steep descents.

Lovely post. Is it easy to get there from Auckland CBD? We’ll go there in one month 🙂

Hi! Thanks, yes – it’s easy to get around NZ, I was staying in Lake Taupo at the time I did the hike at Tongariro. Here’s a link that might be useful for you: http://www.greatlaketaupo.com/things-to-do/walking-hiking/tongariro-alpine-crossing/transport-providers-guides
