Richmond Park is one of London’s eight Royal Parks and covers an area of 2500 acres. Originally a deer-hunting park, Richmond Park has 300 Red Deer and 350 fallow deer roaming freely.
We visited in February and enjoyed getting up close to the wildlife.
Richmond Park has a varied landscape of hills, woodland gardens and grasslands set among ancient trees abound in wildlife. If you visit in autumn you’ll be there during deer ‘rut’ (breeding season). You may see red stags and Fallow bucks competing for females …roaring, barking and clashing antlers in an attempt to fight off rivals and attract as many females as possible.
The young are born between May and July. Their mothers keep them hidden in the bracken and long grass.
Richmond Park has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a National Nature Reserve.
