Cyprus is an island country. It’s considered a transcontinental country, with parts of its territory in both Europe and Asia. Cyprus is known for its beautiful beaches and ancient ruins. Cyprus’s dramatic coastline is a great place to go searching for the perfect beach. From popular beaches to hidden beaches we discovered some of the idyllic beaches of western Cyprus.

Further along the coast from Paphos the waves are pretty strong – great for messing about in but there are some warning signs. Not one for the kids…Emma Latimer Cyprus coast
Legend has it that Aphrodite, the Goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and pro-creation, rose from the foaming waters at Paphos.

A popular sight, Aphrodite’s rock is just off the old road between Limassol and Paphos, a spot that has become famous because of its myths and legends.

Road-tripping this fantastically rugged coastline was a great way to get up close with stunning scenery.
The water is often choppy here so there aren’t many swimmers.

Further up the coast the beaches were great for kids.

The beaches even inspired some creativity.
While travelling up to the northern tip of Cyprus’ western coast I came across this rustic ‘Way to Beach’ sign. It helped us find the way to a beautiful secluded beach tucked away in the headland.
I love the simple block letters of the sign as well as the relaxing summer colours of the landscape.
I photographed the simple sign thinking it would suit the square format of my cushion cover fabric designs. The result is a bold, fun design that reminds me of summer.

We enjoyed the drive to Limassol, but it wasn’t our favourite place, we preferred the remote beaches up north.

The sunset makes the waves appear calm and peaceful but they were pretty rough.

As the Greek poet, Kavafis, once said in his famous poem, Ithaca, life is not just about the destination, but the wonderful journey that you take to get there. Where have you found your perfect beach?
