Travel Bolivia: the Salar de Uyuni, home to salt, cacti & pink flamingoes

Salar de Uyuni, is the world’s largest salt flat,  located at high altitude in southwest Bolivia.

The area was formerly a prehistoric lake that dried up leaving behind a desert-like landscape of stunning bright-white salt.

Located at 3656 metres above sea level Salar de Uyuni’s ecosystem spans 11,000 sq km.

The salt landscape stretches as far as the eye can see.

And amid all that salt is Cactus Island, officially Incahuasi Island, an island of rock populated with hundreds of very tall cacti.

The cacti-studded island is striking, sitting in a vast flat expanse of crisp white salt that seems to go on endlessly.

On route to Uyuni’s salt flats we travelled through the Atacama Desert where surreal landscapes are commonplace. Don’t these rock formations look Dali-esque?

Enjoy seeing pink flamingos feast on algae in freshwater lakes.

Salar de Uyuni is entirely unique and totally unforgettable. It’s a surreal, unexpected and mind-blowingly beautiful trip.

We were backpacking around South America when we travelled by Jeep for four days with a local tour company. We organised the trip upon arrival in San Pedro de Atacama.
